Although the first recorded contact with them did not occur until Giovanne de Verrazano’s visit in 1524, the Narragansett people have been in Rhode Island for over 30,000 years. They were a strong warrior tribe commonly offering protection to the Niantic, Waumpanoag, and other smaller tribes.
